Bel Air Chair by Peter Shire. Shire designed the Bel Air in 1982, and its asymmetrical form and use of clashing colors have made it one of the most recognizable items from the Memphis collection. The asymmetrical back of the chair is inspired by shark fins and the Stevens House by architect John Lautner, which is located on the beach in Malibu. Like other early Memphis furniture titles, 'Bel Air' was derived from the name of a luxury hotel, in this case, a five-star hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
