Mercury was first presented as a revolutionary living room statement piece in both designer sofa and armchair versions in 1961 at the inaugural Salone del Mobile Milano. Created by IPE, a company founded in 1959 by the Cavalli brothers, Mercury is a true example of mid-century modern furniture innovation.

IPE pioneered a game-changing construction method, replacing traditional bulky upholstery methods (like springs and horsehair) with lightweight, molded polyether foam over sleek metal structures. This engineering breakthrough allowed them to create the soft, rounded forms and organic shapes of the era, establishing Mercury as a pioneering example of contemporary furniture design and a timeless piece of Italian furniture history.
