It is said that Verus, who ruled alongside Marcus Aurelius (r. A.D. 161–180), was an idle and feckless leader, but the fragmentary head at the Museum shows him favorably depicted as leonine and majestic. The original bust typifies the Antonine style of carving, with its exquisite drillwork in the hair and dramatic engraved eyes.
